Obuasi West (Ghana Parliament Constituency)
Obuasi West is one of the constituencies represented in the Parliament of Ghana. It elects one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election Kweku Kwarteng is the member of parliament for the constituency. He was elected on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) won a majority of 31,101 votes out of 48,254 to become the MP. Obuasi Municipal District
Obuasi Municipal District is one of the forty-three districts in Ashanti Region, Ghana. Originally it was formerly part of the then-larger Adansi West District in 1988, until part of the district was split off to create Obuasi Municipal District on 15 December 2003 (effectively 17 February 2004); whose remaining parts had been absorbed into parts of Adansi North District and Adansi South District respectively. Later, the eastern part of the district was split off to create Obuasi East District on 15 March 2018; thus the remaining part has been retained as Obuasi Municipal District. The municipality is the southern part of Ashanti Region and has Obuasi as its capital town. Resources The city is well known for its natural resource: gold. Ashanti Region
The Ashanti Region is located in southern part of Ghana and it is the third largest of 16 administrative regions, occupying a total land surface of or 10.2 percent of the total land area of Ghana. In terms of population, however, it is the most populated region with a population of 4,780,380 according to the 2011 census, accounting for 19.4% of Ghana's total population. Kwaku Kwarteng
Kwaku Agyemang Kwarteng (born February 12, 1969) is a Ghanaian civil engineer, economist, and politician. He is a two term Member of Parliament for Obuasi West constituency in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. He is a member of Ghana's New Patriotic Party and a deputy minister of finance. Life Early life Kwaku Kwarteng was born on February 12, 1969, in Kokofu in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. He attended the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in nearby Kumasi, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering in 1996. The Parliament of Ghana is the legislative body of the Government of Ghana. History Legislative representation in Ghana dates back to 1850, when the country was a British colony known as Gold Coast. The body, called the Legislative Council, was purely advisory as the Governor exercised all legislative and executive powers. In a first-past-the-post electoral system (FPTP or FPP), formally called single-member plurality voting (SMP) when used in single-member districts or informally choose-one voting in contrast to ranked voting, or score voting, voters cast their vote for a candidate of their choice, and the candidate who receives the most votes wins even if the top candidate gets less than 50%, which can happen when there are more than two popular candidates. This is a list of the 275 constituencies represented in the Parliament of the Republic of Ghana, as at the December 2016 general election. It had been increased from 260 at the previous election in December 2012 parliamentary election. Each constituency is represented by a single member of parliament (MP). There were 230 parliamentary constituencies previously. History At the time Ghana became an independent country, there were 104 seats in parliament.
